Highly Commended – Caught in the Spotlight – This photo was taken at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, on an overcast mid-winter's morning, allowing for good saturated colours. I had been looking for photo opportunities while the aloes were still in flower. These plants create great opportunities for interesting, bold compositions with these Lesser Double Collared Sunbirds, who love to perch on the smaller dried up ends of the Aloe leaves. I positioned the bird in my frame, in the middle of the leaf's bright highlight, using a soft focus.
