Finalist – Fynbos Emerald – Malachite sunbirds are difficult to photograph because they’re always moving around. When a misty cloud covered the Simonsberg, near Franschhoek, I knew the conditions would allow me to use flash to underexpose the background – if I could just get close enough to a sunbird… When this little one rested for a split second on a dew-drenched pincushion protea close to me, I knew it was my lucky day.
