Great events come in threes at Killarney Raceway

Killarney is hosting a day full of adrenaline-filled events on 2 April.

Short Circuit Racing on the Half Main circuit will happen from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, followed by Rallycross on the World RX circuit from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, as well as MSA Drag Racing all day on the Drag Strip.

Killarney Rallycross

Round two of Killarney’s 2022 Short Circuit series features a full programme of races for MiniMoto/PocketBikes, 125/150cc Motorcycle Juniors and Seniors, Super Motard Juniors and Seniors and ClubSport – a combined category comprising SSP 300, Moto 3, Moto 4 and Supermono Motorcycles that always provides close and completely unpredictable racing.

The action is non-stop, each category gets three races on the day and there’s a new race starting every 15 minutes. Spectators can sit anywhere on the stands and still see almost the entire circuit. The pits are also open to spectators so you can get to see the motorcycles up close.

With 34 entries at the opening event of the season, Rallycross is really taking off in more ways than one at Killarney. Some entrants are nervous about the famous jump in the first dirt section of the World Rallycross circuit after seeing professionals like Ken Block grabbing huge air off it. Only to find that not only can conventional suspension handle the landing without problems but it’s also the most fun part of the circuit.

Rallycross combines the best aspects of rallying, drifting and stock cars in one exciting, high-octane spectacle, with short four or six-lap races on a purpose-built 1.3 kilometre, part-tarmac, part dirt-track circuit in a stadium-type arena. This includes a huge jump and a lot of sideways action.

There are races for four-cylinder cars, limited to two litres in capacity and a maximum output of 130kW, six-cylinder cars of up to 168kW, while the BMWs of the E36 Cup have their own class. Cars with more power and turbocharged cars fall into the open category, where almost anything goes.

Competitive Drag Racing under MSA rules is all about purpose-built drag racers, lightweight bodies fitted with highly modified, insanely powerful engines, sequential gearboxes and huge ultrasoft ‘wrinkly’ tyres. Such as Hermann Mostert’s Nissan Champ half-ton bakkie, powered by a turbocharged 2.8-litre Toyota twin-cam straight-six.

However, there are classes for everything, including superbikes and streetcars, so you’re guaranteed a full day of straight-line action. There are a variety of food and drinks on sale from upmarket vendors right next to the pits who know just how to re-fuel motorsport fans. But you’re also welcome to bring your cooler box and gazebo, light up your skottel braai and make a day of it.

Spectator tickets are R80 from the gate or from Computicket. It is R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12. Western Province Motor Club members just need to provide their membership book at the gate on entry and you can get access to all three events.

Please bear in mind that when you purchase your tickets online, you must still collect the physical tickets, including the free tickets for children under 12, at Computicket or the Computicket outlet at the money market counter in your nearest Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper or Usave store.
