Celebrate Heritage Day at Killarney Motorsport Bonanza

Posted on 20 September 2022

Killarney’s Heritage Day Motorsport Bonanza on Saturday 24 September features MSA Drag Racing on the Drag Strip and Rallycross on the World RX circuit.

That’s a more accurate reflection of Killarney’s heritage than you’d think; motorsport at this venue began on 1 March 1947 with a day of quarter-mile ‘sprint racing’ on a disused section of the old national road to Malmesbury.

That’s 75 years ago this year and yes, Killarney was a street-racing venue before it became a racetrack!

Come and celebrate our motorsport Heritage Day with us; spectator tickets, from Computicket or at the gate, cost only R80 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12 – and for that you get access to both events. Western Province Motor Club members also get in free on production of their membership book at the gate on entry.

Scott Wyness, the fastest man on the day last time out in his Volkswagen Caddy, is back – but the star of the show is likely to be Barrascort, Tolla Daniels’ amazing MK1 Escort. It’s powered by a force-fed straight six built at the Ford plant in Barramundi, Australia (hence the name) and Daniels was running high eights last time out, with more to come.

Mierwaan Thomas (BMW M3) aced Class 6S at the previous event; he’s another early entry who will take some beating, as will Niaz Khan and his Honda Civic in Class, who posted a splendid 11.03966 second pass at 212.79km/h in August.

Another welcome early entry comes from Suzuki GSX-R1000 pilot Kashief Mohamed – now Wynand van den Berg will have somebody to race against! Once again, however, Mohamed will have to bring his A-game to better Van den Berg’s previous top run of 8.95933 seconds at 241.79km/h.

In addition, IASCA will be hosting an internationally sanctioned, World Record Sound-Off in the Joubert Pits, where the loudest vehicles in the Western Cape Province and a number of entries from further afield – including the new Taxi Class – will compete for IASCA trophies and World Record status in the idBL and Bass Boxing formats.

The best installations are surprisingly clean and tidy, with all the components easily accessible and cables neatly and safely routed, and it is notable that they also achieve the biggest numbers. Sound-Off contestants take their passion seriously, and it shows.

For more information on the IASCA sound-off and to enter contact Keiran Cloete on 082 619 0400.

Competitive Drag Racing under MSA rules is all about purpose-built drag racers, lightweight bodies fitted with highly modified, insanely powerful engines, sequential gearboxes and huge ultrasoft ‘wrinkly’ tyres. But there are classes for everything, including superbikes and street cars, so you’re guaranteed a full day of straight-line action, with a variety of food and drinks on sale from upmarket vendors (including halaal) who know just how to re-fuel motorsport fans.

You are also welcome bring your cooler box and gazebo, light up your skottelbraai and make a day of it.
