Meet modern day adventurers at the Getaway Show

Posted on 21 August 2018

Traversing the African continent on an adventure-filled, meaningful expedition in a 4×4 is the dream of many travellers. Visitors to The Getaway Show can gain first-hand insight from modern-day adventurers and conservationists.

For the first time in its history, South Africa’s premier travel and outdoor show will host some of the country’s highest-profile expedition leaders, including professional adventurer Peter van Kets, adventure photo-journalist Jacques Marais and KZN adventurer, eco-warrior and humanitarian, Carla Geyser.

They’ve all led incredible, bucket-list expeditions to promote conservation and exploration across South Africa and beyond, and they’ll be on hand to show off their 4X4 vehicles, share their incredible stories, and to talk about their next adventures with visitors at the show.

Dunlop, one of the most iconic and recognisable tyre brands in the world and a Getaway Show sponsor, has partnered with professional adventurer Peter van Kets and adventure photo-journalist Jacques Marais as part of their Beyond Expeditions series for  “Beyond The Rift Valley” expedition. Peter and Jacques will be travelling across all kinds of roads (including those in very poor condition) across Africa to put Dunlop’s AT3G tyres to the test.

Departing from Cape Town on 23 September, they’ll cover more than 11,000 km in less than 30 days, through South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda, and Malawi including stops at Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu. The journey through Rwanda alone is noteworthy: a world-first traversed on foot and mountain bike. It will include the Great Congo-Nile Divide including the ascents of three Virunga volcanoes, Karisimbi, Bisoke and Sabyinyo.

Both Peter and Jacques are Children In The Wilderness ambassadors. The main focus of the journey will be to highlight the importance of educating children living in the wilderness areas about the value of conservation while raising awareness and funds for sustainable solutions for the conservation of wilderness areas.

Peter will be on site at The Getaway Show on Saturday 15 September. He will also be featured at The Getaway Show’s Travel and Taste Lounge, located just behind The Getaway stand, near the show entrance.

Another exciting event that kicks off from the Getaway Show on Sunday 16 September will be the departure of an all-women team who will be travelling through 4 countries over 50 days, covering 9,000 km.

Headed by Carla Geyser, KZN adventurer,  humanitarian and founder of the NPO, Blue Sky Society Trust, the Journeys with Purpose: Rise of the Matriarch expedition team will traverse South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia armed with purpose and passion.

This ecotourism fundraising initiative combines adventure travel with conservation efforts, raising funds for – and awareness about – human-wildlife conflict. Expedition members are able to join a leg of the 6-week journey or complete the entire trip alongside Carla, helping raise money for youth conservation education and non-profit organisations that are doing phenomenal work on the ground to conserve Africa’s wildlife. Monies raised will benefit four causes, namely, Elephants Alive (South Africa), Rare and Endangered Species Trust (Namibia), Eco-Exist Project (Botswana) and the Soft Foot Alliance Trust (Zimbabwe).

Carla and her team will engage with local communities especially children on the human-wildlife issue. The team will distribute 30,000 educational booklets, connect with anti-poaching groups and visit conservation groups and schools. The team will also meet with women doing remarkable things at a grassroots level, to assist in conservation efforts. The educational booklets will also be made available at The Getaway Show.

Carla Geyser will be on site at The Getaway Show starting 14 September through 16 September, with her expedition vehicles on display. She will be speaking about her expedition experiences with visitors each day at The Getaway Show’s Travel and Taste Lounge.
