A chat with last year’s Toyota Fortuner 4×4 Challenge competition winner

Want to know what you can look forward to in this year’s Toyota Fortuner 4×4 Challenge? We interviewed last year’s winner Byron Coetsee (who entered the competition through Getaway‘s Facebook page) to give you the low-down.

What made you enter?
I saw the competition advertised on TV and again in Getaway magazine. When I realised what I could win, even by simply being chosen as a competitor, it was a no-brainer.

When you arrived at the challenge, how did you rate your chances?
I was fit but I was a little worried when one of the other competitors rocked up at the first challenge (it involved a lot of running) in his knee-high compression socks and reflective running glasses. This guy was an avid runner, competing in the Comrades every year, along with the Dusi.

I had injured my foot a month before the event. However, my plan was to go as hard as I could, for as long as my body would remain upright – and if I was going to hospital, I’d be driving myself there in my new Fortuner! Simple as that.

What was the most fun part of the challenge?
With a background in rock climbing and cycling (mostly downhill), I enjoyed these two challenges the most.

The other fun part was getting to spend time with Giniel de Villiers. I’ve followed the Dakar Rally for years and plan to do it one day (on a motorcycle), so to meet and chat to Giniel, an elite Dakar athlete, was awesome!

Why should adventurers enter the 2018 competition?
If you enjoy pushing yourself physically and mentally, you’ll love this. You have to solve problems, communicate well and be smart about how you approach a challenge – you can’t rely on fitness alone.
Meeting the sports celebrities is great too.

The final and most obvious reason I’d recommend it is for the prizes. Even if you come last, you still get to walk away with the most incredible gear from the sponsors.
