Mother and daughter kick off year-long overland trip through Africa

Just a few days after Christmas 2015, tragedy struck a small family in Islington, London. Nadja Ensink-Teich was left a young widow after her husband, Jeroen Ensink, was murdered outside their doorstep by a stranger suffering from psychosis.

Now, six years later, Nadja and her daughter Fleur are embarking on an overland journey through Africa to honour her late husband.

Jeroen was a world-renowned water engineer. At the time of his death, he was running a project in Malawi for the provision of water and sanitation. This was one of many projects he worked on at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, according to The Guardian.

Unlike their previous trip in south-east Asia, which lasted only a few months, Nadja hopes to spend a year overlanding in Africa with a modified Land Rover equipped with a kitchenette, water tank and solar panels.

A year on the road may seem ambitious, but Nadja is dedicated to promoting Jeroen’s scholarship and to keeping his memory alive.

Nadja, Fleur and a close friend started their ‘African Odyssey’ on 28 April in Cape Town. Nadja plans to visit all the places and people Jeroen worked with and will be stopping in Tanzania, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
