Rare sighting of a pangolin with her pangopup

Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 19 October 2022

Most people hope to see the Big 5 when visiting a game reserve, but it’s always good to remember that there are many other wild and wonderful creatures to look for on your game drives. Finding a honey badger digging for food, ground hornbills crossing the road, or even hooded vultures circling overhead can make for a very exciting trip to the bush.

One very lucky Kruger visitor came across an extremely rare find. Not only did he get to see the elusive pangolin, but what made this sighting even more magical was the little pangopup riding on her back! The visitor was able to film the pangolin walking along the ground with her little pup balancing on her back. The video was posted on 11 October by Kruger Explorer, watch the sighting below.

Pangolins live off a diet of ants, termites, and larvae, and without teeth, they have to use their tongues to eat their prey. They are nocturnal which is why a pangolin sighting is so rare, and are mostly solitary.

Unfortunately, pangolins are the most trafficked animal in the world, which is why finding a pangolin with her pangopup should be celebrated.
