KwaZulu-Natal has been hit with a massive hail storm, in which Pietermaritzburg has been affected the worst. Senzelwe Mzila – cooperative governance and traditional affairs department spokesperson – has deployed disaster management teams for relief efforts, according to News24.

As a result of the extreme weather conditions, the N3 has been blocked off, and drivers are urged to drive with caution or to stay off the road entirely. Residents shared video footage with Storm Report SA on Facebook.

In addition, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level two warning for the western parts of the Free State and North West, and for the eastern parts of the Northern Cape. Yellow level two indicates that the weather conditions have a high possibility of occurring, but will have minimal damage. Conditions include localised flooding, excessive winds, hail, lightning and flooding of low lying areas.

An orange level five has been issued for the Eastern Cape, meaning that the potential for damage is significant. Expected weather conditions include large amounts of small hail and lightning, heavy downpours, damage or loss of infrastructure, property and vehicles, flooding of roads, settlements and low lying areas, and potential disruption of essential services. Livestock also face significant danger under these conditions.

As usual, SAWS urges individuals to remain away from tall objects, or electricity conductors such as golf clubs or fishing rods. Individuals are advised to remain home if possible, and off the roads.
