‘Crab Cam’ in Australia reveals submerged realities below the ocean Posted by David Henning on 9 February 2022 Kayak fisher Andy Brunell had the idea of submerging a GoPro from his kayak off the coast of Adelaide, Australia, and revealed the other world that exists below the sea without humans present to affect the animals’ behaviour. According to National Geographic, the ocean covers 71% of the earth’s surface, yet only 80% remains unexplored. When Brunell started recording what goes on below the waves he said he’s ‘been ‘I’ve been surprised by all the different things I’ve picked up along the way’. Brunell has a background in Marine Biology, and told ABC that he was curious about what ‘goes on while I’m fishing. It’s entertaining, I think, especially for people like crab fishers, because a lot of people fish but don’t spend time underwater.’ He set up a public page called Crab.e.cam where his videos received tens of thousands of views. His video’s garnishing attention is a testament to the curiosity people have about the ocean where so little is known. Brunel concluded that ‘If that makes people think about the marine environment, then I’m happy about it.’ Watch the video below of an intense battle between a crab and an octopus off the coast of Adelaide.
