Prickly pears look intimidating until you eat them! – Getting ready for the Pedal2Peak Tour

Its hard work planning a charity cycle tour!

There is the problem of having to organize all your spares, waiting for quotes, getting a web page up and running, badgering your pharmacist for a comprehensive medical kit, travel insurance, visa’s, passport renewals, looking for sponsorships, pushing for donations to your charity… the list just rolls on.

All the above must be done while still holding on to your 9 to 5 to fund the whole story!

It gets even more hectic. You get home from work and have to load 30kgs on your bike and pull off 40km of training before sinking in behind your laptop and having to read all the emails of companies who have declined to assist us due to the global economic crisis, but still wish the best of luck in the venture.

You still smile and push on to the goal.

We did a great training ride through the Baviaanskloof this weekend. Kilometers of solid climbing. Burning legs and heavy loaded bicycles caused us to break for a snack.

Marc and I noticed the multitudes of prickly pears which were to be dessert. After carefully getting the fruits from their intimidating, prickly perches, we rid them of there hairy arsenal of thorns.

We cut open the skin and tucked into our juicy rewards.

Then it dawned on me that no matter how hard the task is, the rewards at the end normally out weigh the effort.

With three weeks to launch, we still have a lot of work and confirmations to make. I’ll just keep remembering how nice a prickly pear can taste!
