World Health Organization calls for international travel bans to be lifted Posted by Taylah Strauss on 24 January 2022 Since more knowledge of the Omicron variant has come to light, many countries have backtracked and lifted their travel bans imposed against several African countries, almost immediately after its discovery. However, not all have, which is why the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on those countries to lift these travel bans, as the strict measures have proven to be largely ineffective, as the variant still spread rapidly in many countries. WHO has also asked that testing and quarantine requirements be based on risk assessment, to avoid financial burdens on international travellers. In addition, WHO also urged countries to remove proof of vaccination as an entry requirement, since there is an unequal distribution of vaccines. ‘Do NOT require proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for international travel as the only pathway or condition permitting international travel given limited global access and inequitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.’ Despite WHO’s pleas, a large portion of EU/Schengen countries has implemented measures that imply that they do not plan to remove this requirement anytime soon.
