Wildfires rage in several European countries Posted by Anita Froneman on 21 July 2022 In the midst of an extreme heatwave in the northern hemisphere, several countries in Europe are battling to contain wildfires. Greece, France, Spain and Italy are some of the worst-affected countries, where fires are still not under control. Picture: Twitter/@JanezLenarcic Greece’s Mount Penteli, north of Athens is on fire. In France, the southwest region of Gironde was ablaze but the fires have been contained. According to the BBC, two large wildfires are still out of control in the north-western region of Galicia in Spain. The heat wave is related to climate change, and was caused by five separate high-pressure weather systems across the northern hemisphere, reports CNN. Temperatures reached 46°C in some countries like England. ‘Yesterday was the busiest day for the fire service in London since the Second World War,’ London’s mayor Sadiq Khan said on Wednesday.
