What to do first at the Two Oceans Aquarium

Posted on 23 August 2019

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a place everyone stops by on their trip to Cape Town, but do you know what to do on your first visit there?

You can purchase an Aquarium ticket at the ticket office in person, online from the website or from an official reseller of tickets such as Webtickets, Get Your Guide or City Sightseeing.

“There is no need to book in advance, but we advise visitors to buy their tickets online if possible as this allows them to skip the queue at the ticket office,” the Aquarium said in a statement. “Remember – you can get a free ticket for your birthday and members get unlimited access for an entire year!”

The Two Oceans Aquarium is home to about 8 000 animals, spanning approximately 300 species. These animals are divided among many exhibits, with the largest and most popular being the I&J Ocean Exhibit, Kelp Forest Exhibit, Predator Exhibit, Penguin Exhibit and Skretting Diversity Gallery.

Visitors are welcome to join in at the informative and fun feeding times for the penguins, sharks and other aquarium critters.

“We believe that our team’s passion and commitment to animal welfare and conservation shines through in all elements of our work. Through the work of our non-profit arm, the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation, we are actively involved in the rehabilitation of stranded sea turtles, the disentanglement of marine mammals such as Cape fur seals, and the conservation and tracking of sharks and sunfish,” the Aquarium said. “We are also actively involved in marine science and veterinary research and collaborate with a large number of educational institutions such as CPUT, UCT, UWC and Rhodes University to improve our understanding of the lives of South Africa’s diverse marine life.”

Book a Penguin Experience and you’ll have the chance to waddle with the colony of northern rockhopper penguins. These birds have all, unfortunately, been stranded on the South African coast and cannot be returned to the sub-Antarctic islands they once called home, however, they are now ambassadors for conservation. Penguin Experiences are just one way the Aquarium is able to create awareness about the plight of wild seabirds.

Simply call the front desk to arrange a front-of-house or behind-the-scenes tour for your group. Annual Members will also receive exclusive invitations to a huge variety of events, including behind the scenes tours led by the senior staff team.

“Remember – you don’t need a guide to enjoy your visit to the Aquarium; all our exhibits include informative signage, and you can enjoy fun, interactive exhibits, such as the Microscope Exhibit, which are manned by floor staff ready to assist you at all times.”
