Venice to curb mass tourism with fees for day visitors

In an effort to curb mass tourism, Venice will be implementing a new set of rules, including fees for certain travellers, effective 16 January 2023.

Nearly all tourists who visit Venice are there only for the day, according to NPR. During peak tourism season, the city is overcrowded, with tourists outweighing Venice’s resident population, which is now just a small fraction of what it was decades ago.

Tourists who do not make overnight reservations in hotels or other accommodation will have to register the date they are planning to arrive online, and pay a fee which ranges from 3 to 10 euros per person, dependent on the high or low season. Day visitors will be issued a QR code as proof. Those who do not comply and are unable to provide a QR code will receive a fine as high as 300 euros.

Tourists who have booked overnight stays pay a lodging tax and are therefore exempt from this obligation. Other exceptions to these fees are children under six years old, individuals with disabilities and property owners in Venice.

Those entering Venice via cruise ships will also be required to pay the fee, unless the cruise company pays a set fee.
