US national parks waive entry fees Posted by Anita Froneman on 20 March 2020 In light of the coronavirus outbreak, Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt has directed the National Park Service in the USA to waive entrance fees at all national parks. Most parks are still operational and visitors can both enjoy nature and practice social distancing during this time of isolation. ‘This small step makes it a little easier for the American public to enjoy the outdoors in our incredible National Parks,’ Bernhardt said accoridng to CNN. ‘Our vast public lands that are overseen by the Department offer special outdoor experiences to recreate, embrace nature and implement some social distancing.’ Phil Francis, Chair of The Coalition to Protect America’s Parks does not agree with the encouragement to visit the national parks, however. In an open letter, he argued that ‘to suggest to the public that gathering at national park sites is acceptable … is irresponsible to the visiting public and employees’ because ‘national parks welcome visitors from around the world.’ For those who are wary of stepping outside, these 32 US national parks offer virtual tours. Back on home soil, some facilities like the Table Mountain Cableway are closed, however all SANParks remain open for visitors.
