Travel smart: How robbers break into your luggage

Posted by Anita Froneman on 10 January 2020

When flying for business or pleasure, the last thing you want is for someone to break into your luggage. Airports pride themselves on the security they provide but sadly, criminals somehow still find a way to invade travellers’ privacy.

Officials did a security sweep at OR Tambo International Airport over the festive season that resulted in 33 arrests, according to BusinessTech.

This led to the confiscation of multiple prohibited tools from airport staff that could be used to open passengers’ luggage. These include box cutters, screwdrivers and self-made metal tools, said airport spokesperson Samukelo Khambule.

While it’s impossible to be 100% secure, there are several things you can do to deter would-be thieves from tampering with your bags:

– Splurge on tamper-proof suitcases. They might be a little more expensive, but worth the peace of mind. Those with a three-point locking system are safer than bags with zips.

– Although you want your luggage to be easily recognisable, avoid going over the top, as according to Forbes, ‘designer and other high-end luggage gets unwanted attention from thieves.’

– Shrinkwrapping doesn’t guarantee safety, but it does make tampering a more tedious task and if the wrap does get cut it’s immediately visible. It’s always a good idea to     use locks as well. You could also buy a luggage cover.

– Don’t pack valuables in your checked bags, rather keep them on your person or in your hand luggage. Make sure to keep these in sight at all times.

– Check your bag at the carousel. If it’s has been pilfered report it before leaving the airport.
