The cherry on top – at the Sandstone Cherry Steam Train Festival Posted by David Henning on 6 October 2021 In celebration of newly relaxed Covid-19 restrictions, narrow-gauge steam trains, restored heritage transport and farming equipment, magnificent vistas of mountains, and simply in celebration of life and the tradition of the age-old cherry harvest, just north of Ficksburg. Vistas of the magnificent Maluti Mountain Range of Lesotho from Sandstone. This getaway is set to put the ‘wow’ back in life on 19 and 20 November. The Cherry Steam Train Festival at Sandstone Heritage Trust Estate in the Free State of South Africa is designed to thrill all ages – a magical, fun getaway for the entire family. One of the many highlights of the event will include Sandstone’s latest restored steam locomotive, the 1968 Johannesburg built NGG16A number 155, which will haul trains for the first time in 21 years! Agricultural equipment in pristine working order. The Ficksburg Cherry Festival has not been confirmed for 2021 due to the Covid 19 pandemic. However, several local establishments will be open over the weekend of Friday19th November and Saturday 20th November, together with Sandstone, which will be offering the steam festival for two days. Sandstone will be offering steam train and ox-wagon rides, and opportunities to view the Sandstone Heritage collection. Entrance: R250 for adults and R140 for children under 12. Trains will run from 10h00 on Friday 19th and from 10h00 on Saturday 21st November 2021 Pictures: Supplied.
