State of disaster declared following KZN floods Posted by David Henning on 14 April 2022 The floods that wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal were officially declared a provincial disaster after an announcement by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Gogta) on 13 April. President @CyrilRamaphosa accompanied by KZN Premier @sziks conducts an aerial surveillance to assess the extent of the damage to infrastructure caused by the #KZNFloods from the heavy rains and changing weather conditions. pic.twitter.com/67r9mBciPT — Presidency | South Africa 🇿🇦 (@PresidencyZA) April 13, 2022 Head of the National Disaster Centre, Mmaphaka Tau, said that after assessing the magnitude of the flooding, all state organs must strengthen their support to the province and implement contingency plans. This places the province in executive charge of managing the disaster, requiring state organs to get involved and coordinate disaster response. KwaZulu-Nata Premier Sihle Zikalala said declaring a state of disaster was the first step. ‘The second step, we are collecting all information to ensure interventions in all areas, that includes ensuring that all people have accommodation. Those who have had their houses destroyed.
