Spain extends ban on South African arrivals

Posted on 10 February 2021

Spain extended its ban on arrivals travelling from South Africa until March 2. Travellers from Brazil and Britain have also been banned until next month.

The new variants detected in South Africa, Brazil and Britain are the reason for the ban.

This decision was made following the detection of a new COVID-19 variant. Legal residents and nationals of Spain and Andorra are exempt from this rule.

The ban on South Africa and Brazil was first instated on February 3, while the ban on arrivals from Britain was put in place in December 2020.

To date, Spain has confirmed two cases of the new variant detected in South Africa, one of the Brazilian variant and 479 cases of the British variant.

Spain’s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, said that hospital’s intensive care wards are nearly completely full due to COVID-19 patients.

Spain has lost 63 061 people to COVID-19 and a total of 3.01-million cases have been recorded in the country as of Wednesday, February 10.
