Using South African Tourism funding, the government is considering a 36-month sponsorship partnership with one of the best-known English Premier Leagues, worth R910 997 814,75 (or one-third of the tourism budget).

According to the Daily Maverick, the documents present the idea of South Africa becoming a destination management organisation (DMO), ‘which promotes locations as travel destinations,’ according to the Daily Maverick.

News24 reports that ‘SAT would receive kit branding, interview backdrop branding, match-day advertising, partnership announcements, training camps in South Africa, and free access to tickets and stadium hospitality.’

The Ministry of Tourism has released a statement saying that all proposals go through a rigorous process before being received by SAT.

‘Essentially, the SAT proposal is to conclude a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. It is non-binding. Such a proposal must still (be accepted by) the Tourism Ministry’ and the National Treasury.
