South Africa jumps two spots up on the Passport Index Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 27 January 2023 South Africa takes 53rd place on the Henley Passport Index for 2023, two spots higher than last year. The Henley Passport Index ‘is the original, authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.’ They obtain their data through the International Air Transport Association, ‘the largest, most accurate travel information database,’ as well as through their own research team. Travel News reports that ‘South African passport allows holders to travel to 106 countries without a visa – 47% of the world’s destinations.’ The two African countries with the strongest passports are Seychelles, coming in at 29th and being able to travel to 153 of the world’s 227 countries, and Mauritius at 34th place.
