South Africa has always been a popular international travel destination thanks to the vast array of experiences, wildlife and natural scenery our country has to offer.

Every year, travel publication Travel + Leisure ‘awards’ cities, hotels and other select establishments across the globe that have been voted for by travellers from all over the world, and we’re not surprised to see South Africa mentioned numerous times yet again in 2021.

‘Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value,’ the publication states.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at how South Africa fared. We featured four times on the World’s Best 100 Hotels list, with andBeyond Phinda Vlei Lodge in Phinda Private Game Reserve coming in at number 20, tied with the Il Sereno Lago di Como in Italy. At number 71 is andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge in the Greater Kruger Area, also tied with Sasaab in Kenya.

Lion Sands Game Reserve in Sabi Sand Game Reserve came in at number 88, tied with Rambagh Palace in India. And at number 90, Umhlanga’s The Oyster Box rounded up South Africa’s appearance nicely.

When it came to the Best 25 Cities in the World, the Mother City ranked number 20, and featured again claiming the number one spot on the list of Top 10 Cities in Africa and the Middle East. ‘This coastal city has a tendency to make even the most wanderlust-fueled traveler consider settling down,’ the publication says. ‘This city is a draw for travelers seeking a mix of urban exploration and nature experiences — with outdoorsy excursions like a hike up Table Mountain or a tasting tour of the Winelands within easy reach before dinner and drinks on the waterfront.’ We couldn’t agree more!
