Ramaphosa approves MOU with India to send 12 South African cheetahs Posted by Jordyn Johnson on 27 January 2023 The Environmental Department announced on Thursday, 27 January, with president Cyril Ramapohosa approving the MOU with India to translocate cheetahs to India over the next 10 years. READ: South African cheetahs to be relocated to the heart of India India’s Asiatic cheetah species, similar to Africa’s cheetah species, went extinct almost 70 years ago. India plans to reintroduce the big cat into their national reserves. The first batch of 8 cheetahs was translocated to Kuno National Park in India from Namibia in September 2022. One of the cheetahs, Sasha, is currently undergoing treatment for kidney-related problems and dehydration, according to NDTV. ‘She is under observation and all other cheetah are fine.’ A team of wildlife experts has been consulted regarding her care and she is being monitored closely. The cheetah will join the group who are already there at Kumo National Park. South Africa will send a dozen cheetah to India annually for the next ten years.
