Sneaky snakes scare Durban driver Posted on 12 February 2020 A man was driving from Pietermaritzburg to Durban when he was confronted by two slithering sidekicks. Justin Naidoo returned home from a night shift at work when the sneaky snakes slid down his windscreen. Speaking to IOL, Naidoo said: ‘It was a Friday night just after midnight, and there had been load shedding when I [heard] a loud thud on the roof of my car. I had been parked under a tree, I initially thought it was from the tree, then I saw two snakes that were entwined together slither down my windscreen.’ Naidoo explained that he headed to a garage, as there was minimal light for him to see what was going on. When he arrived at the garage, he opened his door windows. Dean Boswell, a Pietermaritzburg snake catcher, was willing and able to assist him in the early hours of the morning. Boswell searched the car but couldn’t locate the two snakes. Boswell spoke to IOL and said he had taken his snake book with him so that Naidoo could identify the pair, which turned out to be Southern brown egg-eaters. Left with few options, Naidoo continued his commute home with the snakes on board. When he arrived home, Naidoo contacted a mechanic who stripped his car and found one of the snakes coiled in the dashboard. The fate of the other snake is unknown. Southern brown egg-eater snakes are non-venomous and harmless to humans.
