She lived on a smallholding in the Walkerville area, south of Johannesburg. Between Saturday and Wednesday morning, she attacked a 39-year-old man and his dog, a pig, and another dog. Both dogs sustained fatal injuries. The spokesperson for the Walkerville CPF, Gresham Mandy, told IOL that ‘on Wednesday morning around 1:55 am reports were received of activity on the Arboretum Farm in Walkers Fruit Farm. This location is 2 km from where the tiger Sheba was last known to be roaming. ‘She had entered a farm area with six dwellings, with families living there. Sheba attacked and killed one of the domestic animals and a call was made for urgent assistance.’ Tracking team members arrived, and the tiger’s owner was also present. ‘Due to the terrain and area, it was not possible to contain her or secure her safety. At 3:45 am the decision was made to euthanise her while it was still safe to do so,’ Mandy explained. ‘Unfortunately, at that moment in time, darting her was not an option. Sheba had moved during the night across the hills to the west side of Fruit Farms, bringing her close to livestock and others residents in a more densely populated area.’ The tiger was eventually shot and killed for the safety of everyone in the vicinity. He concluded by saying that ‘this was not an easy decision to make at the time and the safety of the community of Walkers Fruit Farms was a priority.’ ALSO READ: Tiger still on the loose in south Joburg Follow us on social media for more travel news, inspiration, and guides.
