SANParks CEO dismissed after disciplinary inquiry

Posted by David Henning on 3 June 2022

Following an internal disciplinary process, the CEO of South African National Parks (SANParks), Fundisile Mketeni, was found guilty of six of the seven charges against him and dismissed.

The internal investigation was launched shortly after Mtekeni was accused of sexually assaulting a 35-year-old employee of Kruger Shalati Lodge at his home on 6 May 2021.

Sexual assault charges were laid against Mketeni while two other senior SANParks employees, Xola Mfeke and Danny Thwala, were charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm related to the incident,

In October however, the charges against Mtekeni were withdrawn, but the SANParksboard set up an independent disciplinary process in July 2021.

Following the outcome of this process, SANParks announced on 1 June 2022 that the relationship between the CEO and SANParks will be terminated with immediate effect.

‘Notwithstanding the outcomes of the criminal proceedings against the CEO, the Board decision was based on the CEO being found guilty of 6 of the 7 charges levelled against the CEO based on his having breached the Code of Ethics and Business Conduct Policy and the Disciplinary Policy and Procedure of SANParks,’ the statement read.
