SA Weather Service issues extreme heat warning for Western Cape Posted by Taylah Strauss on 14 January 2022 The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an extreme heat warning for the entirety of the Western Cape until January 15. Persistently high temperatures can be expected in the Cape Metropole, Drakenstein and Stellenbosch municipalities as well as Knysna municipalities. The Cape Winelands, Central Karoo, and Oudtshoorn municipalities can expect temperatures of 40 degrees Celcius and above. SAWS also advised that these conditions can dry out vegetation and contribute to veld fires. The heat also negatively impacts the human body’s ability to cool down, which can lead to hyperthermia, which can be fatal if treatment is not administered promptly. Residents and visitors are encouraged to avoid prolonged sun exposure, strenuous activities and to stay hydrated and under shade. Kids and animals are not to be left in cars unattended, and ensure that your pets have enough water and shelter from the sun.
