SA Express under provisional liquidation

Posted on 28 April 2020

It has been a tumultuous few months for state-owned airline SA Express. In February, the airline was placed under business rescue.

As a result of the national lockdown, SA Express suspended operations on 18 March ‘until further notice’. All non-critical SA Express staff were placed on compulsory leave as a result of operations halting.

At the end of March, interim CEO Siza Mzimela left the company in pursuit of other opportunities. In a statement, SA Express said: ‘Mzimela joined SA Express as interim CEO following her role as a member of the intervention team entrusted with the mammoth task of resuscitating the airline after it had been grounded.

‘In just 18 months and against incredible odds, the Board and Management, made huge strides to restore the airline. All malfeasance that led to the corrosion of governance structures eradicated.

‘Despite her stated intention of a limited tenure at the airline, her commitment and passion for SA Express has been resolute, opting to remain with the team through highly challenging times.’

On Tuesday, 28 April SA Express was placed under provisional liquidation. The Johannesburg High Court granted the order, according to IOL.

Those affected by the liquidation, however, still have an opportunity to give reason as to why the airline should not be liquidated. A final decision will then be made by the court, according to BusinessLIVE.

This means that those affected by the liquidation will still have the opportunity to give reasons the state-owned airline should not be liquidated before a final order is made by the court.

Getaway Magazine reached out to SA Express for comment regarding the situation but did not hear back in time of publication.
