Rhinos to be reintroduced to Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park Posted by David Henning on 23 May 2022 The last rhino was seen in the Hwange area in 2005, a once common sight in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. Now, Imvelo Safari Lodges is behind a conservation effort to bring these iconic animals back. The first objective was to ensure that security was up to scratch so that the new arrivals will be safe in their environment. Many rhino-conservation success stories across Africa are on private land, but Imvelo’s Community Rhino Conservation Initiative represents a paradigm shift – by placing rhinos on community land with locals as custodians. Imvelo announced that two rhinos will soon be relocated to Hwange in just a few days, with the rhinos taking a 10-hour journey across Zimbabwe to Hwange. Hwange National Park in northwest Zimbabwe is one of the country’s top national parks with a diversity of mammal species, which include 5 000 elephants and the endangered African wild dog.
