Residents rejoice as rain pours down in Graaff-Reinet

Residents of the drought-stricken Karoo town are overjoyed as bountiful rains fell from Tuesday afternoon.

In December, Portia Makhanya, the provincial head of the Department of Water and Sanitation, gave a bleak outlook for the Karoo. She said that the long-term forecast shows no significant rain for at least a month, and pointed out that Graaff-Reinet is shown as a drought hot-spot on climate maps, according to The citizen.

The Nqweba Dam was empty, and many of the boreholes unable to produce water. Now, although the town is not out of the woods yet, residents can breathe a sigh of relief at least for now.

Facebook users posted pictures of the welcome waters, which measured around 30mm.

For Thursday, 30% chance of rain is predicted and none for the weekend so far.
