Port Alfred beaches closed for swimmers’ safety Posted on 10 July 2019 A young surfer in his early 20’s was bitten on the leg on 10 July at approximately 10:30am while surfing with friends at East Beach in Port Alfred. The NSRI issued a press release stating it is suspected that a juvenile white shark bit the young man. The surfer had managed to get out of the water safely by the time the SA Police Services, Gardmed ambulance services, Ndlambe Municipal Protection Services, Ndlambe Municipal authorities and the NSRI Port Alfred duty crew responded and arrived at the scene. Paramedics attended to the lacerations on his leg and he was taken to hospital. He is reportedly in a stable condition. As a precaution, the local municipal protection service has closed all beaches around Port Alfred to swimmers until further notice. The Ndlambe Municipality has issued a notice appealing to bathers and paddlers to be aware of this incident and to exercise caution around Port Alfred’s coastline.
