Police confiscates more than 2 000 units of abalone in Eastern Cape

Poached abalone and diving equipment was discovered and confiscated in the Eastern Cape in three separate incidents, a police statement reported on Wednesday, 7 December.

K9 members, the Gqeberha Flying Squad, and private anti-poaching units executed special operations ‘to apprehend illegal poachers operating in the ocean.’ Eight bags of abalone containing 1 119 units of abalone were confiscated on Maitland Beach. Six suspects ran off in different directions upon seeing the police.

The second incident happened when Public Order Policing was patrolling on the M4 road. They noticed a runner duck in the ocean moving from Summerstrand to Bluewater Bay. The police immediately rushed towards the beach as the boat sped off. They patrolled the beach and found another five green bags holding 1 007 units of abalone.

Later on the same day, more diving gear and equipment, as well as two rubber ducks were found and confiscated at Noordhoek beach. The South African Police Department said that an enquiry docket was opened for investigation.
