Ongoing search for man who disappeared in surf at Strand Beach

The NSRI Gordon’s Bay crew responded to a call of a person who had gone missing in the mid-surf break at Strand Beach at about 4:45 pm on Wednesday, 4 January 2023.

A team of NSRI rescue swimmers, City of Cape Town lifeguards, the Law Enforcement Marine Unit, WC Government Health EMS, GB Med ambulance services, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, SA Police Services and the Strand community neighbourhood watch responded.

The NSRI rescue craft was launched, and an EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter and a WC Government Health EMS rescue squad drone were deployed.

Despite the extensive air, sea and shoreline search, there remains no sign of the male who had been reported missing in the water.

According to a statement released by NSRI, ‘5 friends from Franschoek had been at the beach for the day together when the man reportedly went missing in the water while swimming with 2 of the friends.’

The search continues, with all units keeping watch.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis will be visiting Strand Beach on Friday after it was closed due to sewage-related issues.

He is reported to be inspecting various community initiatives in place to ensure that beachgoers can enjoy the beaches safely.
