One night at the Cullinan Hotel Posted on 3 September 2019 Tags:Cape Town, Cullinan Hotel, Western Cape Situated on the outskirts of Cape Town’s Central Business District, is an institution that is Southern Sun: The Cullinan. With one night to spare, there are endless things to experience at this fine establishment. There are also many things to do in the surrounding town of Cullinan. From the moment you step into the lobby, you are greeted by friendly, helpful staff who make you feel right at home. Checking in is a smooth process and your bag is swiftly taken to your room without having to ask. It’s difficult not to notice the glints of water flickering off the ceiling of the lobby. The flashes of light catch your eye and draw your attention to the opulent pool outside. On a fluke sunny day in the throws of winter, I struggled to resist taking a dip. Once seated at a pool-side table at Stella Café and Bar, a smiling waiter presented a much-welcomed drinks list. From the delectable cocktail menu, I opted for the Elderflower Spritz: thirst-quenching and delicious. What is a faux summer’s day without tapas? Stella Café and Bar whips up a mean selection and if you’re not a meat-eater, don’t stress – the tapas come in plant-based options too. There is literally something for everyone on the seasonal menu. Next on the agenda was a shoulder, neck and head massage at the Mangwanani Cullinan Boutique Spa. Again, the therapists are so friendly and accommodating. Trotting up the stairs, I was escorted into a haven that was my therapy room. The next 35 minutes were pure bliss, my shoulders needed the beating they received. If I could have paused time in that moment, I would have. After the treatment I went to my room and freshened up for dinner. Being positioned on the fourteenth floor gives you sweeping views of the Mother City that never get old. From Signal Hill, down to Bo-Kaap, through De Waterkant, Foreshore and to the harbour – the atmosphere of Cape Town in the early evening on a Friday is visibly electric. After spending far too long admiring the view, I promptly showered and changed in preparation for Stella Sessions, a weekly event that takes place every Friday from 5-7pm at the pool of the Cullinan Hotel. Stella Sessions allow you to enjoy bottomless cocktails paired with a Stella snack platter for R220 per person. Booking is essential and if you have any dietary requirements, then just let the person making your reservation know. After eating to my heart’s content, I was looking forward to a good night’s sleep. The next morning, curtains wide open and taking in the view, I got ready and headed downstairs to the Peach Tree Restaurant for breakfast. I find myself feeling overwhelmed at breakfast buffets, how can you choose between a hot breakfast, waffles, croissants and fruit? The answer: you don’t. You over indulge and start your Saturday off with a high carb, high protein, high fat delicious meal, washed down with orange juice and coffee. Calories don’t count on weekends, remember? If you’re planning a trip to Cape Town, then a stay at The Cullinan or even book a table at Stella Sessions. A visit to this hotel is well worth your time.
