The new Cape Winelands Airport owned by investor Rob Hersov has its goals set straight at becoming direct competition to the Cape Town International Airport.

The new airport is located on a 150-hectare northeast of Durbanville and features four runways that only had two in use for aviation training and private aircraft.

Cape Winelands Airport’s finance and operations manager, Mark Wilkinson mentioned that they will be building more hangars and facilities that are more modern and fit for operators within the general aviation sector.

“General aviation currently uses up valuable space and resources at the Cape Town International Airport,” Wilkinson told My Broadband.

According to Wilkinson, Cape Town needs a smaller second airport to serve non-scheduled flights. He added that the Cape Winelands Airport will not be closing themselves off to any scheduled flights, and by the time they can operate scheduled flights, Cape Town International Airport will be bursting at its steam.

The Cape Winelands Airport has the potential to alleviate congestion at the Cape Town International Airport as it will be the most practical alternative for those residing in the northern parts of the Western Cape.
