Miniature steam train experience launched in Cape Town Posted by David Henning on 4 October 2021 The Western Province Live Steamers Society has launched a miniature steam rail in Cape Town, which will now operate monthly. The fun new attraction is located at the Klein De Grendel ‘Station’ in Parow West, behind the Ajax Cape Town Soccer Academy. Visitors to the ‘station’ can have train rides on the miniature trains, picnic on the surrounding fields between the tracks and watch these old rollers in operation. The Klein De Grendel ‘Station’ The Western Province Live Steamers Society is a non-profit dedicated to the preservation and development of miniature steam diesel and electric locomotives. So each miniature train has been built and maintained by the club’s own hobbyists and engineers. The society’s chairperson Geoffrey de Vartek told IOL that, ‘Our aim is for people to experience a lovely family outing with our enthusiastic members and their little locomotives. We would also like to encourage young people and adults alike, to start working with their hands again and get hobbies, where you effectively see the product of your labour. Working not only for yourself but also for the benefit of society and your greater community.’ Happening on the first Saturday of every month, a trip on a steam rail makes for a fun family outing. There is no entrance fee and rides cost R10. operating hours are from 13:30 to 16:00. Location: Bertie Genade Street, Parow.
