Mauritius declared virus-free Posted by Anita Froneman on 13 May 2020 The island nation of Mauritius currently has 0 active coronavirus infections. The country’s official COVID-19 page reported 332 confirmed cases, out of which 322 people had recovered and 10 have died according to Africa News. The country has now gone 17 consecutive days during which no new case was recorded. A lockdown remains in place, however, as a precautionary measure. The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) recently released a statement saying they would like to ‘reassure South Africans that Mauritius is still very much open for business, as airlines and tour operators continue to take holiday bookings in anticipation of the skies opening up once COVID-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions allow.’ Read: Mauritius ‘very much open for business’ Mauritius is the second African country to become virus-free after Mauritania reported 0 active cases on 19 April. There have since been two more infections in the country, however. The only country in the whole of Africa to not have reported any cases of the virus since the outbreak is Lesotho.
