Man mistakenly rescues fox pup

A Japanese man made an unusual discovery whilst on a walk in the Hokkaido Prefecture. He happened upon an innocent looking puppy, alone and either abandoned or lost on the side of the road.

Instead of leaving the animal alone, he decided to take the animal home and use social media to track down its owner. He posted the following pictures to Twitter, with the location and time of finding the pup.

He’s caption read ‘I rescued this puppy from the side of Route 275 in Tsukigatacho at around 2:30 p.m. It was a little past the 7-Eleven on the way to Sapporo (right before the traffic light).’

His image sparked a response and people began replying to his Tweet speculating whether the puppy was in fact a dog. A video posted by the man, under the handle ‘Marcy’ raised even more questions. It was certainly making a sound, but it wasn’t quite barking.

Users quickly pointed out that the animal in question was rather a fox (kitsune) pup. These animals are not kept as pets in Japan because they carry diseases harmful to humans.

The fox pup, which turned out to be a female, did however need help. Her age is estimated between 1-2 months and is too young to be on her own in the wild. She would not have the necessary skills to survive.

Instead the fox pup was taken to North Fox Farm (Kita Kitsune Bokujo), a fox sanctuary in the Hokkaido town of Kitami, where she can live happily with other foxes.
