Man found in possession of rhino horns arrested at OR Tambo

A 46-year-old man was arrested at OR Tambo Airport after six pieces of rhino horns were found inside his luggage, concealed in sweets and green tea boxes on 1 February 2022.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, said the man was arrested as he was about to board a plane to Malaysia after suspicious objects were discovered in his luggage

‘Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Germiston responded to the crime scene. Upon arrival, police discovered five rhino horns wrapped in a foil, concealed in sweets and green tea boxes,’ Malumu stated.

Further investigations lead the authorities to the aeroplane, where the suspect’s second luggage was dispatched, and the investigation team discovered six more rhino horns.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with contravention of the National Environmental Management Act and illegal dealing in rhino horns.
