The operation was carried out by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in Port Shepstone together with the K9 Unit. ‘The Hawks team reacted on information received about a suspect who had advertised a San rock art for sale on social media in the South Coast area. A search warrant was executed on the premises at Montague road in Sea Park which led to the arrest of the suspect in possession of the San rock art on Thursday, 18 February 2021,’ said the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a statement. The man was due to appear in the Port Sheptone Magistrate’s Court on Monday, February 22 but his trial was delayed. This was done so that archeologists can conduct an expert report and establish the origin of the San Rock Art, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase.
