Lufthansa

‘Since the inception of our very first flight to South Africa on 14 May 1962, Lufthansa has been at the forefront of building trade relations between Germany and South Africa, whilst remaining true to our vision of connecting people and cultures from all over the world,’ says Andre Schulz, General Manager Southern & East Africa Lufthansa Group

‘Our customers and employees are the keys to our successful development in South Africa, and we look back at this moment in history with great pride and we celebrate with you by saying ‘Thank You’ for the last 60 years of flying to South Africa together.’.

On 14 May 1962, Lufthansa’s inaugural flight to South Africa departed Germany, making at that time, a series of intermediary steps in Africa using the Boeing 720B, the industry’s best long-haul aircraft at the time. This service offered two weekly flights between Johannesburg and Frankfurt, with four fuel stops in Salisbury (Harare), Nairobi, Khartoum and Athens, which took 16 hours to complete.
