KZN thunderstorm causes road closures and claims the lives of 3 children Posted by David Henning on 4 April 2022 Parts of KwaZulu-Natal received severe downpours over the weekend, resulting in road closures and three fatalities on Saturday 2 April. The South African Weather Service issued a yellow two warning for thunderstorms, predicting severe downpours in the south of the province. In the Harry Gwala district, three children died as a result of the severe weather. In one incident, a 10-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were swept away while trying to cross a river. In the second incident, heavy rains led to the collapse of a house, with one fatality of a child reported. Disaster management teams are continuing their assessments of affected areas, with localised flooding closing some roads. The road between Marburg and Shelly Beach was the site of a flash flood, with the road completely impassable after the past weekend’s rains.
