The ranger was on duty with colleagues in the Shangoni Section of the reserve when the shooting took place. It is unclear what happened, but the South African Police Service and South African National Parks are working together to investigate the incident. KNP head ranger Cathy Dreyer extended her condolences on behalf of the reserve’s management: ‘It is a sad day when we lose one of ours in the line of duty. We are working closely with the police and the colleagues and will provide an update at an appropriate time.’ The deceased’s identity will be withheld until the next of kin have been notified.
