Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum reopens after two years

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is set to reopen to the public on 1 April 2022.

Attempts to reopen the museum in January 2021 proved unsuccessful after no profits were made, according to MSN.

However, in light of South Africa’s relaxation of restrictions, the museum announced the official reopening on their Instagram page on 8 March 2022:

‘The countdown to our reopening has begun. We’re opening our doors to the public again on 1 April 2022. The museum cannot wait to welcome you.’

The museum hosts temporary and permanent exhibitions, as well as an exhibit solely dedicated to anti-apartheid activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela.

Their permanent exhibition details the history of South Africa’s journey to liberation and includes pivotal historical moments such as the formal race classification, the rise of black consciousness, Mandela’s release from prison, the first democratic election in 1994, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
