Is the Fourways hippo vacationing in a family pool? Posted by Anita Froneman on 14 January 2021 We’re unsure if it is the very same hippo. Residents in Fourways, Johannesburg have been visited by a hippo from the Hartbeespoort Dam, and it now appears the hippo is vacationing in one family’s swimming pool. A video circulating on social media shows a hippo underwater in a swimming pool at a home, and rumour has it, it’s the #Fourwayshippo (which is now trending on Twitter). Take a look: The Hippo ended up in someone’s home swimming pool ??? pic.twitter.com/u9HXPl25yC — Prince of Fourways. (@Thato_DeLuxe) January 13, 2021 Residents were amused and making lighthearted comments: ‘Nah I’m with the hippo on this. Last year we were all like “Nature is healing itself”. This year cos we’re sick of lockdown its all “aaagh! hippo in Bryanston!”’ one user said. ‘I am very invested in this hippo in fourways. He/she seems to be living their best life in the pool,’ another added. However, one Twitter user said, ‘apparently that video of a Hippo in a pool is actually from a couple of years ago in Zimbabwe. I mean, would a South African actually be that relaxed when seeing a HIPPO IN THEIR FLIPPING SWIMMING POOL.’ The Gauteng Agriculture Department said it first received a call about a hippo on the loose in Chartwell near the Jukskei River on December 29. The department said that it would not attempt to capture the hippo as long as it didn’t pose a risk to human life, as the hippo is expected to wander back home in due time.
