Irwin family celebrates ‘World’s Oldest Rhinoceros Iguana’ Posted by Anita Froneman on 20 January 2021 The Australia Zoo, owned and managed by the Irwin family, has a very distinguished resident. Rhino, the rhinoceros iguana, holds the Guinness World Record for the ‘World’s Oldest Rhinoceros Iguana’ at 40 years of age. ‘Our sweet rhinoceros iguana, Rhino, just received a Guinness World Record for being the ‘World’s Oldest Rhinoceros Iguana’,’ Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late Steve Irwin, posted on Facebook. ‘At nearly 41 years of age, Rhino lives at Australia Zoo and loves basking in the sun while eating his favourite treat, hibiscus flowers. We love you dearly, Rhino!’ she concluded. Rhinoceros iguanas owe their name to the three horny lumps on the top of their noses. These animals are classified as Vulnerable, and its original habitat was the forests in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, according to Bristol Zoo. ‘The average lifespan for the rhino iguana in captivity is considered to be around 16 or 17 years, though some researchers have postulated that in the wild it could be possible for members of the Cyclura (rock iguana) genus to live to 75-80 years old!’ the Guinness World Record states.
