India builds eco-bridge for animals to cross road Posted by Anita Froneman on 2 December 2020 The Ramnagar Forest Division of Uttarakhand in India has built a ‘pedestrian’ bridge for small animals to safely cross the highway running through the area. This 27-metre environmentally-friendly bridge is made from bamboo, jute and grass and is suspended among the trees above the highway. A step in the right direction ! However, many animals, especially reptiles were run over by motorists. ‘We have constructed this bridge in the hope that small animals and reptiles like snake, squirrel, monitor lizard will cross the road through the bridge and avoid being killed by vehicles,’ a ranger said according to the Hindustan Times. There are cameras along the bridge, so authorities can monitor the animals crossing and be aware of any incidents. The Ramnagar Forest is home to India’s oldest wildlife reserve, the Jim Corbett National Park, which hosts animals like tigers, buck and crocodiles.
