Hundreds stranded on mountain after Hartbeespoort cableway failure

The Harties Cableway near Hartbeespoort Dam experienced a mechanical fault leaving about 300 people stranded on 17 December.

According to The Citizen, the cable car was out of order for two hours. ‘We could see that something was wrong and it seemed as if the cable car had been experiencing some mechanical problems,’ said one passenger speaking to the publication. ‘At the time, no one told us what was going on or gave us an estimated timeframe around when we could expect the cable line to be operational again.’

A member of the cable car management team responded to a tweet regarding the breakdown stating ‘a non-critical piece of equipment had a fault and was repaired immediately on site’ by their technical team. Passengers made their way back down safely by 8 pm.

‘No one was hurt. Our disaster Group offered any assistance, including medical, if needed, but it was a minor incident that didn’t need that sort of intervention,’ said Mahmood Cassim from Fairland Community police forum.
