How to stay safe while outdoors Posted by Anita Froneman on 22 March 2020 During these stranger-than-fiction times, we now face the dreaded coronavirus in South Africa and we all have to rearrange our lives. It’s especially difficult for outdoor-lovers, as authorities plead with citizens to stay indoors. However, you can still head out and enjoy nature, as long as you know how to keep yourself and others safe while doing so. Getting fresh air not only is good for your physical health but for mental health too and a great way to combat cabin fever. Things to remember about the virus: The elderly and people with pre-existing conditions are most vulnerable and most at-risk, should they contract the virus. The virus does spread more easily than the flu, and can be contracted from touching certain surfaces. You can be infected but asymptomatic for up to 14 days before feeling ill. Tips when going outdoors: You don’t always have to go far. Explore suburban parks or fields in your neighborhood. Buy food in moderate bulk where possible and wash your hands and face immediately after. Then take your own snacks and drinks on trips to avoid having to buy too often. (But also don’t panic buy essential items in unnecessary amounts. Always keep others in mind!). Only go alone (where safe) or with people you are isolating with. When you encounter others outdoors, keep a good metre from them. Always cough or sneeze in your arm and immediately sanitize your hands, arms and face after. Do not go outdoors at all if you are sick. That would be irresponsible towards others and dangerous for your own health. Avoid doing dangerous sports where you have a higher risk of getting injured. The medical community is already overwhelmed and might not be able to respond quickly should you call for help with a broken leg. Let’s not add to their already heavy burden. Enjoy the extra bit of time you have to explore and unwind. We might as well make the best of it! Also read: Should you visit SA’s beaches right now?
